The Gender and Communication Section of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) invites submissions of abstracts for papers and panel proposals for its open sessions at IAMCR 2019 conference, to be held at the Complutense University in Madrid, Spain from 7-11 July 2019. The theme of the conference is “Communication, Technology, and Human Dignity: Disputed Rights, Contested Truths”.
The Gender and Communication section seeks research that balances theory and practice, and explores the relationship between gender, media and communication. In recent years, sessions have included papers on body image, identity, representations, the queer theory, pop culture, HIV/AIDS, human rights, violence, discrimination, social change, development, elections, and media production, reception, consumption, or monitoring in diverse forms of film and media (television, radio, print, social media, advertising, and the Internet). In keeping with our philosophy of inclusivity, we welcome contributions without regard to empirical, theoretical, disciplinary or philosophical perspectives.
The deadline to submit abstracts is 23:59 GMT on 8 February 2019. This deadline will not be extended.
We welcome submissions on any topic involving gender, media, and communication. However, please note, we will give special consideration to papers and panel proposals that examine connections to the conference theme: Communication, Technology, and Human Dignity: Disputed Rights, Contested Truths. Proposals for consideration by IAMCR’s thematic sections and working groups must be submitted via the Open Conference System at http://iamcr-ocs.org
We would like to encourage early career scholars to tackle the intersections of gender, identity, dignity and sexuality with media and communication processes. Themes suggested, which seem more consonant with our current section, include (but are not limited to):
• Gender voice, and visibility
• Gender identity versus quality
• Gender expression and social participation
• Gender rights and the achievement of universal dignity
• Gender and sustainability
• Gender and social equity, economic prosperity, or environmental health
• Gender and climate change
• Gender and environment
• Gender sustainability and curricula
• Gender and social movements
• Gender and (eco)territorial conflicts
• Women’s social media campaigns on conflicts
• Media discourses on women’s resistance during territorial conflicts
• Gender, misrepresentation, and authenticity
• Gender and development
• Matrilineal heritages in the media
• Gender and nationalisms
Languages
We encourage the submission of abstracts of individual papers and proposals for panels in English, Spanish, and French languages. Note: We would like to schedule Spanish/French presentations in the regular thematic sessions. However, we may consolidate the Spanish/French presentations in specific sessions to avoid the interpretation issues. The presenters interested in scheduling their Spanish/French presentations in regular sessions may invite bilingual colleagues to interpret their presentations, if fluent in English.
Submission guidelines
All proposals must be submitted through the online IAMCR Open Conference System at http://iamcr-ocs.org from 3 December 2018 – 8 February 2019. Early submission is strongly encouraged. The Section bars email submissions of abstracts addressed to any Section or Working Group Head.
Abstracts should be between 300 and 500 words in length, and should:
• Have a clear title.
• Include the name(s) of author(s) and professional title(s) (i.e. professor, postdoctoral fellow, independent researcher, graduate student, student, etc.). However, please do not include this information in your abstract, as the abstracts are peer-reviewed anonymously.
• Panel proposals should include a title, a rationale for the panel (300 to 500 words), and the name, university affiliation and email address of the person responsible for the panel. Each panellist should submit an abstract listing the paper’s title, the author's name, university affiliation, and email address. All panels shall include 4 or 5 papers. Only the IAMCR/GEC members, or registered conference participants may chair or moderate the panel discussion/session. The conference registration is mandatory for an outside moderator or chair.
• Outline the research objectives/questions/hypothesis.
• Outline the theoretical framework and methodology, if relevant.
• Clearly propose the main argument.
• Not include bibliographies and author profiles in the abstracts.
• Make theoretical contribution.
• Be original and/or significant.
• Be free of jargon and language errors.
• Be relevant to the work of the GEC.
It is expected that for the most part, only one (1) abstract will be submitted per person for consideration by the Conference. However, under no circumstances should there be more than two (2) abstracts bearing the name of the same applicant either individually or as part of any group of authors. Please note also that the same abstract or another version with minor variations in title or content must not be submitted for consideration to other Sections or Working Groups of the Association, after an initial submission. Such submissions will be deemed to be in breach of the conference guidelines and will be automatically rejected by the Open Conference System, by the relevant Head or by the Conference Programme Reviewer. Such applicants risk being removed entirely from the conference programme.
Upon submission of an abstract, you will be asked to confirm that your submission is original and it has not been previously published in the form presented. You will also be given an opportunity to declare if your submission is currently before another conference for consideration.
Presenters are expected to bring fully developed work to the conference. They are encouraged to submit a completed paper to the Section, Session Chairs, and/or Discussants prior to the conference. The deadline for full paper submissions is 7 June 2019.
The Gender and Communication section encourages its members to take part in their moderation and chairing sessions. Please let us know if you are interested in moderating or chairing the GEC sessions at the IMACR 2019 - Madrid Conference, or in assisting in managing the sessions on 7-11 July 2019.
Furthermore, we are looking for volunteers to take part in the blind peer review system, especially from members fluent in Spanish and French. We would also like to encourage our bilingual participants and members to volunteer to interpret the Spanish and French paper presentations at our sessions in Madrid. Success in organizing the conference relies on the assistance from our members.
Decisions on acceptance of abstracts will be communicated to individual applicants by a section chair no later than 28 March 2019.
Participants will be asked to confirm their attendance by 11 April 2019. If you do not confirm your attendance, you will be removed from the conference programme. The draft conference programme will be known by 7 May 2019. The early bird registration period finishes on 14 May 2019. The deadline for full paper submission is 7 June 2019.
